Serendipity Talk: Thomas Mann at 150: How his antinomies still enliven his characters
In this talk on the recent occasion of Thomas Mann’s 150th birthday, we examine how antinomies – dualisms or antagonisms – still enliven his main characters: Hans Castorp in The Magic Mountain, Gustav von Aschenbach in Death in Venice, Thomas Buddenbrooks in Buddenbrooks, and the composer Adrian Leverkuhn in Doctor Faustus.
Michael W. Farrell, who served for 30 years as a judge on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, was formerly chair of the English and German departments at Georgetown Preparatory School in Rockville. His lifelong passion for the novels of Thomas Mann began when he acquired a master’s degree in German from Columbia University.
