James Joyce Birthday Celebration

OLLI at AU will celebrate James Joyce's birthday on Monday, February 2 by a reading and film showing in Room A followed by a party in the social space on the 5th Floor:
- 3:30 PM showing of short TED ED video
- 3:45 PM reading of Proteus chapter of Ulysses by Robert Aubry Davis
- 4:30 showing of film "James Joyce's Ulysses"
- 5:30 PM sharing of birthday fare and cheer
PROGRAM Notes: Robert Aubry Davis of PBS fame is a noted scholar of ancient music and the works of James Joyce whose reading of the third chapter (Proteus) of Ulysses is celebrated. After hearing his reading many people have made this their favorite Ulysses chapter. This is remarkable because the chapter is well-known for causing the downfall of many would-be readers of the novel. The 1987 documentary film "James Joyce's Ulysses" has excellent scene reenactments and interviews including one with Joyce's alter-ego Anthony Burgess.
WEBSITE/SCRIPT: The Proteus text and other information/resources are available at the event website: James Joyce Birthday Party 2026
