972: The Islamic Golden Age in Morocco

July 11 and 12
9:45 AM - 11:15 AM
In-Person

The history of medieval Morocco will be presented through slides and video clips with a review of Moroccan history prior to the Arab conquest, the impact of the conquest and the scientific and cultural achievements during the Islamic Golden Age. While scholarship has focused on Islamic Spain and Sicily, Morocco was the route by which ideas and people traveled between east and west, especially after the Muslim losses in Europe. The Golden Age lasted longer in Morocco than in other parts of the Arab world and Morocco’s contributions are still relevant and visible today. The newly-restored Imperial cities of Fes and Marrakesh stand as the best-preserved medieval "medinas" (walled cities) in the world.
