Through discussion and lecture, we will focus on the work of a representative; how members of Congress get to collective decisions; how Congress can check the Administration; and how citizens can influence Congress. An opening brainstorming session will elicit participant perspectives, experiences, and questions about Congress. The agenda will be shaped in part by current events and what emerges from the initial brainstorming session.

Philip SharpPhil Sharp was elected to Congress from Indiana in 1974 when citizens were revolted by the Watergate scandal. He served for 20 years. Upon retirement, he became a lecturer at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and part of the time served as Director of Harvard's Institute of Politics. Later, he was president of the Washington think tank, Resources for the Future, retiring in 2016. He has served on several non-profit and corporate boards of directors. He taught a course about climate change policy at Columbia and Georgetown. He has a BS from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service and a PhD in American government from Georgetown.
