1520: Broadway Musicals of 1943

1943 is a keystone year in the history of Broadway, because that is when Oklahoma! opened and set new standards—artistically and financially—for musicals. 1943 was already a boom time for Broadway as well, as customers flush with wartime earnings and, given rationing, few options for spending them happily packed the theatres. We'll look at shows on the boards that year that harked back to past eras, like Merry Widow and Vagabond King, at those that were very much of the time, like Something for the Boys and Star and Garter, and those that tried to look ahead and expand what musicals could be—including, of course Oklahoma! We'll conclude with a few subsequent shows influenced by the Class of '43This study group has a high class size capacity.
