505: English Composers Bringing Romanticism Into the 20th Century

Monday
1:45 - 3:15
Starting March 04
Hybrid  and Online

We continue our exploration of the great composers. This semester, having just talked about the early days of Romanticism in the 19th century, we will study the great English composers who brought Romanticism into the 20th and then helped to evolve it into something new and different. To that end, we will look at Edward Elgar, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Benjamin Britten. Consistent with the many predecessors to this class, we will take some time on the biographies of the composers, consider their epochs, listen to many musical excerpts typically in videos of performances, and dip lightly into music theory at times. This study group has a high class size capacity.
