1640: Ekphrasis: Poems about Painting (and vice versa)
Thursday9:45 - 11:15
Starting June 05
Online
Poets write about paintings, and artists paint about poems. Both are "ekphrastic" art: art in one medium about art in a different medium. In this group we will view images of art created in response to poems about art; and we will read poems about art, focusing on poems and art by and about women. We will ask: how does the poem affect your view of the art? How does the art affect your interpretation of the poem? For instance, we will read and discuss Ann Sexton’s poem Starry Night and view Van Gogh’s painting of the same title. Emphasis will be on discussion with some lecture. Group members will be invited to share a short poem or writing. Prior knowledge of poetry or art is not assumed.
