766: Herodotus: The Histories
Tuesday1:45 - 3:15
Starting September 22
Online
Herodotus is the “Father of History,” as well as (in the view of some) the “Father of Lies.” The discipline of history begins with him—his is the first known systematic investigation of the past. He tells of the Greeks’ victory over the formidable forces of Persian kings Darius and Xerxes at Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea. He also includes extended digressions on ethnography, geography, gods, and gossip. Since this master storyteller invented the discipline of history, no century has passed without a historian to record it. We will read and discuss the Landmark edition of The Histories to learn what it is about this work that makes it “history” and why it is still read today. This study group has a high class size capacity.
