548: The History of Rock
Tuesday1:45 - 3:15
Starting March 04
Online
Rock 'n' roll has been the pop music of America from its birth in the mid-1950s until quite recently. Although it began as a synthesis of black blues and white country, there have been several different strains in the evolution of rock. We will explore these different iterations: Rock-a-Billy; Rhythm and Blues; Doo-Wop and Schlock-Rock; Folk Rock; the British Invasion; Woodstock music; Punk; the 80s; Grunge; and the death of rock 'n' roll. We will also talk about a few other important figures in the history of rock who don’t fit comfortably in one of the above categories, such as The Beach Boys and Tom Petty. Examples of each of these musical styles will be played in class. This study group has a high class size capacity.
