599: Color Theory and Practice

Friday
9:45 - 11:15
Starting March 21
In-Person

In 1704, Isaac Newton published Opticks, outlining his studies on light and color. In the centuries since, numerous artists and scientists, including Goethe, Itten, and Albers, have expanded upon Newton’s ideas or developed their own theories of color. We'll review these theories and in the process, we’ll learn the language of color: primary, secondary, tertiary; hue, saturation, value; complementary; color in light vs. print; and more. To underscore our color studies, we’ll explore some general art principles: highlights and shadows; symmetry; negative space. Each week we will do color theory projects taking approximately one hour, some in class and others as homework. Your world will never look the same!
