A year ago, OLLI SGL Joe Oppenheimer led an inspiring class on playwriting, and four intrepid playwrights-to-be took up the challenge. The result was not only some amazing one-act scripts, but starting in April, a series of readings of these works! As part of OLLI's commitment to building community through its courses, as well as its social and cultural events, these readings will give the playwrights the audience they crave, and OLLI members can see world premieres and offer feedback after each reading. A social time will follow. Stay tuned for more details about each play which will be shared here and in our weekly newsletter.

April 24: "The Writers' Group" by Joe Oppenheimer

In "The Writers’ Group," by Joe Oppenheimer, a volunteer runs a writers' group in a community center for the homeless. The homeless members talk about their problems with emotion while the volunteer has difficulty relating to them. This leads to increasing tensions and conflict. The drama is based on real events witnessed by the author.

Make sure to register for these Wednesdays at 12:30 PM at the links below. You won't want to miss them!

April 3: "Scenes from a Homecoming" by Chuck Jones

April 10: "Gutter Day" by Sean Finnell

April 17: "How Can I Be...?" by Jeanne Kent

Author Disclaimer: “The Writers’ Group” focuses on the depiction of real events that a white volunteer has relating with a group of homeless people, all of whom are racial minorities. Although a substantial effort was made, we were unable to cast minority actors for most of the minority roles, which we understand could be objectionable. We are also sensitive to the use of stereotypical language that could be offensive.
