As we celebrate the nation's Semiquincentennial in 2026, this course will provide an opportunity to learn more about past commemorative events and the years in which they occurred. We will explore the political, historical, and cultural context of the celebrations. Who were the nation's leaders? What were key national and sectional issues being debated? How did Americans live and work, and what did they aspire to in each of the celebratory years? In looking at America in 50-year intervals, we will consider and discuss common themes and differences and how each generation celebrated.
