931: Three Financial Crises That Changed America

July 6-8
1:45 PM - 3:15 PM
In-Person

America has been through numerous panics and recessions over its history but three stand out as particularly serious with lasting effects. The panic of 1873 started in Europe but quickly spread. It had major short-term impacts on U.S. employment but much longer effects to immigration, unions, and industry. The depression started with an upheaval in the stock market in 1929 but quickly spread to the entire economy. The social and political fallout is still with us today through institutions such as social security. The housing bubble and the crash of 2008 had similar lasting effects. This class will explore the causes and effects of these major economic events and discuss what we have learned from them.
